Denim in the City | Nike Tailwind
The story of the Nike Tailwind 79, known as “the shoe with air” began in 1977 with aerospace engineer Marion “Frank” Rudy. He came with the idea of filling the sole of a sneaker with an air pocket to provide extra cushioning. His idea was rejected by several footwear manufactures before he brought it to Nike.
Nike used the technology to create the first sneaker with air, hidden in the midsole of the sneaker. The Tailwind was presented during the Honolulu Marathon in 1978. The sneaker sold out and subsequently got a full release in 1979.
Nike has been putting the Tailwind back in the spotlight for a while now and this is only logical because it’s the first shoe with air. You can’t put something like that aside and it is certainly iconic in the image of the sneaker head. This version of the Tailwind 79 is made with a unique combination of denim and distressed suede. This pack consists of a typical blue denim color and is combined with a light beige / white version.
